All of us at some time or another have felt the effects of work related stress. Stress and anxiety are one of the biggest causes of absence from work and can cause serious long term health problems if not recognised and controlled.

JCT is pleased to include CIEH Stress Awareness Level 1 qualification in our portfolio.

The qualification is aimed at raising awareness of likely sources of work-related stress, the range of symptoms and effects and the options available for its control. Successful completion of the course will prepare candidates to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the development of strategies to combat work-related stress, in co-operation with their colleagues.

We will also be offering a complementary chair massage to all in attendance. The 15 minute session will give you an insight into the benefits of workplace massage.

On-site chair massage represents the most effective solution currently available to directly control the physical effects of stress, increase morale and performance capacity and reduce stress-related illnesses.

**Site Waste Management Plans required on site by April 2008** 28 February 2008

From April 2008 all projects valued over £300,000 will be required to prepare and manage a SWMP....

SWMP's what do they mean to you? 28 February 2008

According to government statistics, construction sites generate a third of all UK waste. SWMP's aim to reduce the amount of waste produced on site and prevent fly tipping. An incredible 10-30% of waste materials on a construction site have never been used - a major waste of resources!

Your company SWMP should identify an individual responsible for resource management, types of waste generated, management options for these wastes, an appropriate and licenced management contractor.

Apart from the fact that the local authority and Environment Agency will be enforcing SWMP's and issuing PENALTIES for failure to produce or keep a plan there are more obvious financial benefits. A well managed plan should also INCREASE PROFIT MARGINS, which is what we all want to hear.

If you would like further infomation on SWMP's or if you would like JCT's assistance in developing and implementing a plan please feel free to contact us via this website, by email or on 01646 685376.

Major Contractors Group leads industry commitment to health and safety training 08 January 2008

The Major Contractors Group (MCG) has announced that, all supervisors on their sites must attend Construction Skills’ Supervisors Safety Training Scheme It is estimated that, as a result, approximately 45,000 supervisors will receive health and safety training from ConstructionSkills by 2010.

The two-day Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), which is part of the ConstructionSkills’ Site Safety Plus (SSP) suite of courses, provides an introduction to health and safety, welfare and environmental issues for those requiring an understanding of the current legislation that applies to them and their work activities.

Take a look at our training courses for details of the course programme, costs and available dates.

After the initial two-year period, MCG will implement a “zero tolerance” policy for those without this qualification on MCG sites, effective from 1 January 2010. Both the SMSTS and the Supervisors Safety Training Scheme are shown as examples of competence within the CDM 2007 ACoP.

All CITB-ConstructionSkills Levy registered companies can claim CITB-ConstructionSkills Grant of £35 per day to help with the costs, and a further £100 achievement grant.
